MARY- ROSE HAYES
Author Teacher Lecturer
Eight weeks, beginning Monday, 15 February, 2010.
6:30-8:30 p.m.
The Writers' House, ASU Campus, Tempe
Course Title: "Eight Weeks, Eight Elements of Story Telling."
Course Description:
All writers are invited to participate in this course, whether they are already working on a novel or short story, are wondering how and whether to start, or contemplating a writing project such as a personal memoir.
Each class will feature a discussion on a different component of story-telling, beginning in Week 1 with "Finding the Story," and progressing through Week 8 with Plotting, Dialogue, Point of View, Language Enrichment, etc. A short period of "free writing" will tap into inner, and perhaps hidden, wells of creativity, and a home assignment will relate to each "topic of the week."
The course will also include an on-going, fully participatory critique of individual manuscripts in a round-table workshop format. This format is helpful not merely to identify possible pit-falls but to encourage writers' strengths, and will be conducted in a hands-on, supportive environment. Participants are encouraged to bring a manuscript to the first class.
A diverse reading list will be suggested for reasons of writing style, variety, and possible controversy of theme.
